Variable modifiers

Change the country language, the letter case or set a fallback value right inside a variable.

A modifier transforms a variable's value when it is displayed. Write it after the variable, separated by a vertical bar |:

{{user.addressCountry|lang:en}}

Modifiers work wherever variables work: signature, profile page, digital card, contact file (vCard) and NFC card.

Available modifiers

ModifierEffectExampleResult
lang:frCountry in French{{user.addressCountry|lang:fr}}Allemagne
lang:enCountry in English{{user.address|lang:en}}1 Unter den Linden, Berlin, Germany
lang:native (or lang:auto)Country in its own language (default){{user.addressCountry|lang:native}}Deutschland
upperAll caps{{user.lastName|upper}}SMITH
lowerAll lowercase{{user.email|lower}}john.smith@example.com
capitalizeCapital letter on each word{{user.firstName|capitalize}}Mary-Jane
initialsInitials{{user.firstName|initials}}MJ
truncate:NCut after N characters (adds "…"){{user.jobTitle|truncate:20}}Head of internationa…
default:valueShown when the variable is empty{{user.image|default:https://…/logo.png}}the fallback image

Without a modifier, the country is shown in its own language ("Deutschland", "United Kingdom").

Chaining modifiers

Modifiers apply from left to right:

{{user.addressCountry|lang:en|upper}} → GERMANY
{{user.city|default:Paris|upper}} → PARIS when the city is empty

Put lang first: it starts again from the stored country and ignores anything done before it.

Good to know

  • lang works on the country alone (addressCountry) and on full addresses (address, address_2, address_3) — for the user and their groups ({{user.groupauto.address|lang:en}}).
  • default accepts a URL (https://…). An unsafe value (javascript:…) is ignored.
  • A misspelled modifier (|uper) makes the variable invalid: the editor flags it and it is displayed as typed.
